Sue Hoskin was commissioned by Victor Harbor Luthern Homes to engage a ‘Community Art Mosaic.’

Mosaic artist Sue Hoskin set out a multi-stage process:

Stage 1 – Create shaped tiles from clay, that need to be painted/glazed

Stage 2 – breaking of tiles to make larger sections of the image

Stage 3 – placement of all elements onto small individual (approx. 20 x20) sized boards that will ultimately join together to make the larger complete image.

Sue worked with both the older generations from the Victor Harbor Lutheran Village as well as the year 4 students from the Encounter Lutheran School.

We found Sue to be an engaging and interactive educator who made the whole experience productive and fun.

Sue Interacted with the ladies and explained the process of making the tiles simply, clearly and patiently. Please find feedback from some of those involved below.

“Sue was a warm and generous teacher and her calm personality made her approachable and likeable, with my first time attendees coming along to subsequent sessions.”

“Sues interaction with the group was cordial, friendly and helpful.” J Taylor

“Sue is a lovely friendly lady who showed us how to put together a mosaic, she explained everything step by step and the end result is great.” P Nairn

“Sue was a patient and clear teacher. Sue explained what each class was going to be about, would show an example or technique then let everyone have a go. Nothing was too much trouble. Sue was happy to answer all questions/perform the technique again for those that needed another explanation/visual.”

“Sue also took each of us through the glueing of precut tiles with plenty of instructions and examples of how it was to be done and how it would look once it was completed.”

“Sue brought us together as a group from the village and we look forward to catching up on more

occasions.”

It was an absolute pleasure to work alongside Sue for this project.

A memorial mosaic commission of the 100 year Anniversary of the Thebarton Senior College, Adelaide by Suzanne Hoskin

This commission was a lot of fun to do as I made all the flowers, leaves, text and the dove from clay and then glazed to the colours needed. The flowers represent the emblems of the many countries that come from all areas of the globe. The art students were involved in mosaicing the royal blue background of the flowers. The Lemon Scented Gum tree has grown in the the school grounds since before the building was built.

& the winner is … by Suzanne Hoskin

Wow! What a fantastic turnout to my first Noosa Open Studios this year. Around two hundred visitors walked through my home and garden studio. They looked at the mosaics, asked questions about classes, collaborations and commissions, and shared their stories about the works they make, would love to make, or will make.

Visitors where from all over Australia and NZ. It was great to talk with everyone, from the surprised never-seen-anything-like-it-before: ‘how can i do it?’, to mosaic artists sharing their experiences. Noosa Open Studios was definitely a worthwhile event, and if I have time I’d do it again next year! .

Lifting Laura’s spirit
For those who collaborated on the mosaic planter during the Open Studios you’ll know that the proceeds of the raffle for the finished object are to assist Laura Shakespeare with her medical expenses to fight breast cancer.

& the winner is …

As it happens the raffle and much desired prize was won by Louise Jones from Townsville, who happens to be Laura’s mother!

Louise and her husband are traveling around Australia in a van at the moment so the planter has found its temporary home in Laura’s garden where she can contemplate life and healing with a beverage of her choice. Is that fate or chance? Whatever your take on winners and losers it’s a wonderful outcome.

A total of $250 was raised for Laura and her family, and she has the pleasure of a beautiful pot made by many hands. Perfect outcome.

A huge thank you to my sisters who helped in many ways, so very grateful! Also a thank you to Diane James, a friend who helped over the 6 days.
